First Lagos Annual Water Regatta

Apr 3, 2010 - As I welcome you all to this 1st State Powered Boat Regatta, I also welcome you all to a new beginning of aquatic experiences in the State of aquatic splendor.

The prominence of Lagos across the World owes its origins to its waters and how it has been used many centuries ago by Europeans especially the Portuguese and later the British to create economic, social, educational, cultural and religious linkages.

The foundations of Nigeria's economy were built from and through her waterways, from the many ships and watercrafts that berthed here long before the advent of aircrafts, bringing explorers, merchants, goods, missioners and so much more.

There were of course some improper uses of our waterways especially the slave trade that we resolve to forgive but never forget.

Today, we commit to a new beginning for the prosperous and dignifying use of Lagos waterways, one of our most important assets.

Presently, a new economy has emerged on the waterways, lagoons and creeks of Lagos, with the passage into law of the Bill that set up the Lagos State Waterways' Authority "LASW A".

Many young men and women are now employed in the Agency that regulates water transportation, granting licenses to ferry operators and ensuring safety across the length and breadth of our waterways.

There is a lot of money and opportunities in these waters and those who seek prosperity are urged to return to it.

I am happy to note that even our local fishermen who use traditionally made canoes have imbibed the culture of using life vests and I urge all other persons to emulate them.

Our commitment to improve the use of water for exchange of goods and services and to connect people has led to the construction of 3 (three) purpose designed jetties in Badore, Ipakodo and Osborne which are nearing completion.

The Regatta signals our commitment to explore to the fullest, frontiers of the possibility of our great water asset for tourism, sports, recreation and so much more.

This is evident in the departure from previous regatta that focused largely on dancing and cultural display, to on expanded format, that incorporates racing competition, kayaking, soiling, boat parade, jet and water-skiing.

I welcome all our guests from far and near to our City-State, the Centre of Excellence and the State of Aquatic Splendour.

I urge you to enjoy the famous Lagos hospitality and look forward to seeing you all and more next year.

Thank you for listening.

Eko o ni baje!
