Dedication Of The New Ikorodu Maternal And Child Care Centre
Feb 4, 2010 - At the inception of this Administration in 2007, the National and local statistic of maternal and child mortality rates were a matter of concern which we gave priority in order to redeem our commitment to the Millennium Development Goals Nos. 4 and 5 for the reduction of child mortality and improvement of maternal health respectively.
Our strategy was simple: to take maternal and child care close to the people while improving the quality of that care to the highest possible level.
We conceived the idea of Maternal and Child Care Centres (MCCs) and designed them as 100 bed facilities to be located in strategic areas of the State to reduce the travel time to, and the pressure on Massey Street Children's Hospital and the Island Maternity, both of which are located in Lagos Island which are visited by women and children from diverse part of the State.
The Ikorodu facility which is being opened today, is the first of 8 (eight) MCCs located in Ifako Ijaiye, Isolo, Surulere, Amuwo Odofin, Ajeromi Ifelodun, Alimosho and Eti-Osa to be constructed, while others are in varying stages of construction and completion.
Ifako Ijaiye and Isolo are ready and will be handed over in a few weeks while others will be completed this year.
I acknowledge that at no time in the history of our country has public service come under great scrutiny as in our time. As a Government that has blazed trail, we recognize that we hold aloft a torch of hope to all and, sundry and we will keep that torch alive whatever it takes.
To all public servants, I say to you today that, we are all confronting history. The option to turn back is not conceivable. We must give everything that it takes to keep this destiny with history and turn a situation of potentials to reality. If it requires more than 24 hours in a day, or more than 100 percent of effort, I pledge to give it and I expect you to match that pledge.
It is therefore an honour for me to hand over the Ikorodu MCC as a port of safe habour to our women, the vessels of our lives and as a sanctuary of care to the fruits of their wombs.
Thank you for listening.
