Partnerships Key To Quality Service Delivery By Govt - Fashola
…Commends Chevron at Facility’s Commissioning

Jul 2, 2009 - Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babatunde Fashola (SAN) on Thursday reiterated the need for a partnership between the Public and Private Sector towards ensuring the deliverance of quality service to the people.

Governor Fashola who spoke while commissioning the NNPC/CHEVRON Medical Incinerator Facility located at the Epe General Hospital, Epe added that such partnership reinforces the belief of the present government that no government can deliver all of the expectation and aspirations of its people irrespective of how well intentioned it is.

According to Governor Fashola: “This strategic partnership between Lagos State and Private partners has worked in several areas and has yielded positive result in areas like security, transportation through the BRT scheme, health care delivery and also helping to improve service delivery in the educational sector”.

He said the gesture by Chevron will give strong support to the health care delivery system of the state Government adding:”It is not the size but the gesture and good nature behind the facility. It inspires us that there are people who are ready to share the burden in providing services to the 18 million people of Lagos which is growing by the day”.

He added that the private sector represents the engine of growth and that government with its policies and programme is the fuel that fires the engine and will determine how efficiently the policy will be implemented.

The Governor explained that the state Government has initiated good policies in the health sector which is getting better by the day and applauded private sector players like Chevron who have joined the State Government in delivering services.

He emphasized that the partnership is important because it focuses on a particular sector which is medical waste and which can be very hazardous if not well managed, saying Chevron only beat the state Government to it but is most welcome.

Governor Fashola implored all stakeholders to take advantage of the facility to ensure that medical waste is disposed in a way that compliments healthcare delivery to the people.

The Lagos State Governor thanked Chevron for the initiative and commended same in other sectors to other viable players in the private sector.

Earlier in his address, an Executive Director of Chevron, Mr Femi Odumabo who stood in for the Managing Director of Chevron, Mr Andrew Fawthrop said the organization is pleased to identify with the Lagos State Government and help to build capacity for medical waste management.

He added that Chevron as an organization believes in protecting people and the environment, adding that this has informed the decision to build the incinerator which would help in effectively managing medical waste.

While thanking Governor Fashola for making land available within the premises of the General Hospital in Epe for the project, Engineer Odumabo added that the facility has capacity to treat 1,500kilogramme of waste at a time which it can reduce to residual one percent of the original weight.

The Governor later cut the tape to commission the project before undertaking a facility tour of the project.

The Governor was also at WoodFields Farm and Theme Park located along the Epe Express Way where he inspected the various parts and sections of the Park which also has a number of wild animals.

The Governor who took time to discuss with the Chief Executive Officer of the Park, Mr Oladipo Bali also mentored pupils of My Lord’s Private School in Okota who came to the Park on an excursion.
