Fashola Visits On-Going Projects, Says Good Governance Will Sweep Polls For AC

Sep 17, 2008 - Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babatunde Fashola on Wednesday undertook an inspection tour of projects under construction in Lagos Island, Yaba and Makoko areas of the state, expressing satisfaction with the quality of work and service while urging the people to vote for the Action Congress (AC) in the forthcoming Local councils elections in the state as the party has delivered on its promises.

Governor Fashola who kicked off the tour with an inspection of level of work at the City Hall, Lagos added that a vote for the Local Government candidates sponsored by the Action Congress would be a vote for continuity and fundamental progress of the State adding that good governance will sweep the polls for the Action Congress.

The Governor informed that except for some logistics problems such as the rains which has delayed in some areas, the contractors have shown commitment at the various sites.

Specifically, he cited the example of the Command Ordinance Depot at Yaba which he also visited and whose fence has to be moved back to establish the full alignment on the road, but where work has not started because of certain details being worked out.

He added that already the state government has received commitment from military authorities but that details of how the job can be carried out without disrupting the operation of the depot as well as the security integrity of the barracks.

The Governor who was received with enthusiasm at all points he visited, also received commendations from the people on the good work which he has been doing since he mounted the saddle.

The Lagos State helmsman expressed satisfaction with the level of understanding and appreciation being shown by the people at the various points visited, adding that it represented a great inspiration to the government.

The Governor expressed his readiness to relocate the people of Better Life community in Makoko, because the environment in which the people were living is not fit for human habitation.

He said such attempts in the past have proven difficult because the people have often been reluctant adding that with the commitment he got from the community leaders moving would not be difficult.

According to the Governor, “I was not satisfied with what I saw at Makoko in terms of the people living in slums. Though the slums have been around for a long time but I think it is not the best places for human beings to live especially when you have children”.

Continuing, the Governor said, “It is a great invitation for illness and disease because vectors and mosquitoes and all sorts of diseases will breed in that area. We don’t like our people to live in such conditions”.

He promised that the government would continue to do its best for the people as there exists more civic engagements with the people being more involved, asking questions and making demands from the government.

While acknowledging that the expectation of the people is very high, Governor Fashola said the relative peace being enjoyed on the political scene courtesy of the present democratic dispensation and has enabled the government to be more focused on the problems and on governance.

Governor who also inspected the construction of fish smoking facilities at Ilaje and Makoko and on going market construction reiterated that the people are also now paying taxes with the beauty of the experience being that people no longer beg for services but rather ask for more to be done.

He told the market women at the Ashogbon Market at Ilaje that the state would consider opening up some parts of the model market for easy access to the main road, but cautioned that this would only be carried out after consultations with all concerned experts.

Other places visited by the Governor were the Fazil–Omar High School, Ahmadiya Primary School and St Francis Junior Secondary School all in Iwaya and Makoko Anglican Primary School, Aiyetoro African primary school in Makoko as well as the on- going work at Oyingbo market and Murtala Mohammed Way in Yaba.

The Governor was accompanied on the tour by members of the State Executive Council.
